Latest company news about Understanding Gondola Shelving in Retail

Gondola shelving is the most common type of freestanding, modular shelving system used in retail stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies, and warehouses. Think of the aisles in your local grocery store – those shelves lining both sides are almost certainly gondolas.

Key features

1, Freestanding & Modular:

  • Units can be attached OR NOT attached to walls.
  • Made of standardized components (vertical uprights/standards, shelves, bases, end panels, pegboard panels, headers) that can be easily assembled, disassembled, and reconfigured.
  • Can be arranged in straight runs, angled sections, or other layouts to fit the store floor plan.

2, Single-Sided or Double-Sided Design:

  • The defining characteristic. A central vertical spine (the "gondola") supports shelving, peg hooks, or displays on single wall side or both sides.

3, Adjustable Shelving & Peg Hooks:

  • Shelves slide onto vertical uprights (standards) that have regularly spaced slots or holes.
  • Shelf height can be easily changed without tools to accommodate products of different sizes.
  • Pegboard panels on the back or ends allow for hanging merchandise using various hooks and fixtures.

4, Versatile Fixturing:

  • Beyond shelves, gondolas can hold:
  • Peg hooks for hanging items (clothing, tools, bags, candy).
  • Baskets (dump bins, basket rails).
  • Slatwall panels for specialized hooks and shelves.
  • Sign holders, price channel strips, and lighting.
  • End caps (high-visibility displays at the ends of runs).

Gondola Types

1, One-Sided Wall Units - Perfect for placement against walls.

2, Double-Sided Units - Display product on both sides in hallways and main aisles.

3, End Cap Unit - Placed at the front and / or back ends of double sided unit

The Difference Between Gondola Shelving Starter Unit and Add-On Unit

Every run always has 1 starter unit and the rest of the sections are Add-On Units.

The Starter Unit has one more Upright than Add-On Unit, it can be used separately; The Add-On Unit share the same Upright with Starter Unit, it must connect onto Starter Unit to use.

The Load Capacity Of Gondola Shevling

Anbox Gondola Shelving Has 700mm, 900mm and 1200mm Length to choose, basically the longer shelf, the less weight capacity.

Usually 700mm / 27.5inch length can bear 70KG / 150 lbs, 900mm / 35 inch can hold 65KG / 143 lbs, and 1200mm / 47inch length can hold 50KG / 110 lbs per shelf. If the main products are canned goods or beverages, suggest to use length 700mm or 900mm.
